Fred Dex is one of only 210 Master Sommeliers in the world and the only one holding that honor in the Carolinas. Fred’s career as a wine and beverage professional spans nearly two decades and has touched upon nearly every aspect of the business.
He got his start early in childhood while growing up in a multi-concept family business in Central Pennsylvania that included a video arcade and miniature golf course replete with a pizza and burger joint. After high school, Fred’s mercurial energy took him on the road to California, Vermont, Nantucket and Jackson Hole where he sharpened his culinary, bartending and wine slinging skills. Along the way an offer to move to New York City to work at the four-star Restaurant Daniel was too good to pass up. The rest, as they say, is history.
Fred spent fifteen years in New York City working in some the the top gastronomic and wine savvy temples in the city. His many years and resume highlights include working closely alongside James Beard Award-winning chefs and restaurateurs including Jean Georges Vongerichten, Danny Meyer and Chris Cannon. He then spent five years with his good friend and mentor Chef Laurent Tourondel as the National Wine and Beverage Director for BLT Restaurant Group where he helped develop and open over a dozen outposts across the United States.
In 2009, Fred started a consulting business, Juiceman Consulting, with the mission of making the world a better place to drink. Over the past six years, Fred has built an incredible array of diverse clients and has worked as the exclusive United States Educator for both Wines of Chile & Wines of Southwest France. He’s been consultant to Chef Laurent Tourondel, Motorino Pizzeria, Max Brenner Chocolate, The Grand Hyatt NYC, Tao Group, Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment, Full Circle Wine Solutions, Nespresso, Star Chef’s and more. Additionally, he has also served as an Adjunct Wine Educator at the International Culinary Center, Editorial Advisor to Sommelier Journal and has hosted dozens of corporate and private wine tasting events.
He has offered his expertise and experience to many of the world’s leading wine publications as a taster, commentator, contributor and panelist. His credits include The New York Times, Food and Wine, Wine and Spirits, Wine Spectator, Beverage Media, Food Arts, Sommelier Journal and Wine Enthusiast. He has also been featured in many of the world’s leading lifestyle publications including Time Magazine, Men’s Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek and People Magazine and has been interviewed on Martha Stewart Radio and MSNBC.
Fred is an accomplished mixologist and cocktail enthusiast. He has had several of his cocktail creations published in The New York Times, Food and Wine, Bon Appetit, People Magazine, Cosmopolitan and Bill Hamilton’s Shaken and Stirred.
Fred’s work also spills into the world of charity. For many years he’s organized charitable wine events to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital as well as founding Glass by Glass NYC, an event that raises over $20,000 for social entrepreneurship.
In 2013, Fred relocated with his family to the Triangle to continue building his consulting business around the region’s burgeoning food and wine scene.
His goal is to rock your world with awesome wines and drinks!
